Our Family History & Reputation
In 1962, Linwood Giberson began buying and selling metals on Canal Street in Dartmouth, starting his business Dartmouth Salvage. In 1979, following in his father’s footsteps, his son Peter Giberson founded Dartmouth Metals and Bottle Ltd.
Come the 1990’s Peter was joined in the business by a third generation, David Giberson. David practically grew up on location and he worked part-time at the company during high school, learning the ins and outs of the family business.
David stayed involved in the company, continuing to work on a part-time basis while studying at university. After graduating in 2003, David started working at Dartmouth Metals full-time, working side by side with his father Peter, eventually taking ownership of the company.
Dartmouth Metals now employs over 40 people locally and sell within the Atlantic region, across Canada, and to foreign markets. We have continued to build our reputation on a solid foundation of trust, expertise and superior customer service.
Our Values: Family, Community & the Environment
Being a family-run business, our values are deeply connected. Families, our employees, our community and the environment are things we value and strive to uplift.
First and foremost, we consider our staff’s safety to be our top priority. Throughout the entirety of our operation, we take great care to ensure the health and safety of our valued employees, to do so we provide safety training; perform due diligence at our demolition sites; and require the proper use of PPE (personal protective equipment), and among many other safety procedures we also have multiple people on site trained in first aid. In these ways, we are committed to ensuring our staff have the knowledge, tools and equipment to do their jobs safely.
At Dartmouth Metals, we prioritize the environment, ensuring its preservation for generations to come. We are constantly looking for ways to improve our processes to recycle higher percentages of material and reduce residues sent to certified landfills sites.
Furthermore, operating a business within our local community underscores our commitment to giving back. We actively sponsor a diverse range of local sporting events, including hockey, softball, golf, and stock car racing. Also, we support community service organizations such as Dartmouth General Hospital, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Feed Nova Scotia, and others.
